What is the ecological cleaning - bioremediation?
Bioremediation is a process that uses living organisms — most often microorganisms (bacteria, fungi), plants (phytoremediation), or their enzymes — to degrade, transform, or neutralize pollutants in the environment, including soils, water, and sediments.
Main idea:
Organisms “eat” or metabolize toxic substances such as hydrocarbons, industrial chemicals, pesticides, etc., converting them into less toxic or harmless products like water, CO₂, or biomass.
Method advantages:
- More environmentally friendly than chemical or physical methods
- Usually more cost-effective and sustainable
- Can be applied directly at the site of contamination
How is the bioremediation process carried out?
The process can be conducted in various ways, depending on the type of contamination and the conditions:
In situ — at the site of contamination:
- Bioventing — Supplying oxygen/air into the soil to stimulate bacteria to degrade pollutants.
- Biostimulation — Adding nutrients that support natural microorganisms.
- Bioaugmentation — Introducing specialized microorganisms that are more effective at degrading specific substances.
Ex situ — off-site:
- Landfarming — Excavated soil is treated in a controlled area with oxygen and additives
- Biopiles — Shaping the soil into piles with aeration to accelerate degradation.
Phytoremediation:
Using plants that absorb or transform pollutants from soils and waters.
Sediment Remediation:
Using specialized biotechnological solutions for the bottom of rivers/lakes, including biomaterials and stimulation of microbial activity.
