What is compost?
Compost is a natural soil enhancer that restores soil structure, enhances aeration, improves moisture retention, and acts as an environmentally friendly fertilizer. It is a stabilized, nutrient- and humus-rich product created through composting — a natural biological process in which microorganisms aerobically (in the presence of oxygen) decompose organic materials. This process not only transforms organic waste into a valuable resource for agriculture and landscaping, but also plays a crucial role in diverting biodegradable waste from landfills, where uncontrolled decomposition releases harmful greenhouse gases such as methane and generates toxic leachate.
Types of composting methods and facilities
The chosen technology depends on waste volume, available space, and type of the input materials.
Windrow Composting
Organic waste is arranged in long, narrow rows that are periodically aerated through mechanical turning. This method is suitable for processing very large volumes of green waste but requires significant space.
Aerated Static Piles (ASP)
This method uses a network of perforated pipes beneath or inside the pile, through which fans either force or extract air. ASP systems allow better odor control and are more compact than windrow systems.
In-Vessel Composting Systems
The composting process takes place in fully enclosed containers, drums, or tunnels where conditions are automatically controlled. Although this is the most expensive option, it requires the least space and is ideal for processing food waste in urban environments because odors are effectively contained.
Vermicomposting
Specific species of worms, such as Eisenia fetida, are used to break down organic matter into high-quality biohumus. This method is ideal for small-scale applications in households, schools, and offices.
